Moderator: Prof. Daniel Kilper (Columbia University, New York, NY, USA)

Dr. Daniel Kilper received a PhD in Physics from the University of Michigan in 1996. He was an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte prior to joining Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent as a member of technical staff. While at Bell Labs, he served as the Liaison Executive and Operations Committee Chair for the Center for Energy Efficient Telecommunications and chaired the Industrial Advisory Board of the Center for Integrated Access Networks. He was the founding Technical Committee Chair of the GreenTouch Consortium and co-chair of the Wireline Core and Access Networks working group. He is on the research faculty at Columbia University and is a senior member of IEEE. He has conducted research on optical performance monitoring, energy-efficient networks, and transmission and control systems for transparent optical networks. He holds eight patents and authored four book chapters and more than one hundred peer-reviewed publications.

Antonio Capone (Politecnico di Milano, Italy)

Antonio Capone is Full Professor at Politecnico di Milano (Technical University), where he is the director of the Advanced Network Technologies Laboratory (ANTLab). Dr. Capone is co-founder and CTO of MobiMESH, a spin-off company of Politecnico di Milano. His expertise is on networking and his main research activities include protocol design (MAC and routing) and performance evaluation of wireless access and multi-hop networks, traffic management and quality of service issues in IP networks, and network planning and optimization. On these topics he has published more than 190 peer-reviewed papers in international journal and conference proceedings. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 1994 and 1998, respectively. In 2000 he was visiting professor at UCLA, Computer Science department. He currently serves as editor of ACM/IEEE Trans. on Networking, Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing (Wiley), Computer Networks (Elsevier), and Computer Communications (Elsevier). He serves often in the TPC of the major conferences of the networking research community and in their organizing committees. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE. He is currently involved in the management and technical activities of a few national and European research projects, and he leads several industrial projects. On the energy efficiency topic it is worth mentioning that he leads the bilateral project between Italy and Canada “Green ICT & ICT for Green” and the international project Beyond Cellular Green Generation (BCG2) of the GreenTouch consortium, and that he was guest editor of a special issue of Computer Networks on “Green Communication Networks”.

Flavio Cucchietti (Telecom Italia, Italy)

Flavio Cucchietti, within Telecom Italia Innovation Center in Turin (Italy), is managing energy efficiency and sustainability aspects related to standardization across the whole spectrum of the ICT, ranging from the energy efficiency of home and network equipment to e-waste to Smart Grids and Smart Cities.

From 1988 is active in standardization and is currently member of many standardization groups acting on Energy Efficient and Sustainable ICT.

He has been working along these years to foster cooperation among all stakeholders and looking at standardization as a natural endpoint of research and development activities in order to accelerate the availability of more economically viable and socially responsible equipment and services.

Cooperates with EC and Energy Star on energy efficiency initiatives.

He is vice Chair of ITU-T Study Group 5 (environment and climate change), vice Chair of the ITU-T Focus Group on Smart and Sustainable Cities and Board member of CEI, the Italian standardization institution in the electrical, electronic and telecommunications area.

Kerry Hinton (Univ. of Melbourne, Australia)

Kerry Hinton received an Honours Bachelor of Engineering in 1978, an Honours Bachelor of Science in 1980 and Master of Science Degree in Mathematical Sciences in 1982, all from the University of Adelaide. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, U.K., and the Diploma in Industrial Relations from the Newcastle Upon Tyne Polytechnic, U.K., in 1984. In 1984 Dr. Hinton joined Telstra Research Laboratories (TRL), Victoria, Australia, and worked on analytical and numerical modelling of optical systems and components. His work focused optical communications devices and architectures, physical layer issues for Automatically Switched Optical Networks (ASONs) and monitoring in all-optical networks. Dr. Hinton was also a laser safety expert within Telstra. In 2006, Dr. Hinton joined the University of Melbourne, Australia, where he is undertaking research into the energy efficiency of the Internet, communications technologies and networks as the Principal Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Centre for Energy Efficient Telecommunications (CEET).

Louise Krug (British Telecommunications, UK)

Louise Krug is a Senior Researcher in BT specialising in energy and carbon reduction of telecommunications networks. Prior to that, she has worked on both optical semiconductors and future Internet technologies. She became interested in improving the energy efficiency of the network when, considering how to improve the availability of the network, she realised how much equipment was underutilised.

Christoph Lange (Deutsche Telekom, Germany)

Christoph Lange received the Dipl.-Ing. degree (diploma) in electrical engineering and the Dr.-Ing. degree (Ph. D.) in communications engineering from Rostock University, Germany, in 1998 and 2003, respectively. Currently he works at Telekom Innovation Laboratories, the research and innovation department of Deutsche Telekom in Berlin, Germany. He has been involved in projects dealing with the strategy for developing the broadband network of Deutsche Telekom. His work is in particular focused on the energy efficiency of telecommunication networks and on broadband access network topics. Dr. Lange is an IEEE member and has authored or co-authored a considerable number of technical conference and journal papers.
